4 Valid Reasons Why You Should Read A Book

I know that this is a review site, but I wanted to discuss something fundamental. What’s the main reason why people should read books? Is it beyond pleasure and informative, and therapeutic? For me, and from what I have learned over the years, there are at least four valid reasons why a person should read a book.

It is undeniable that today’s generation is focused on electronics like smartphones, computers, and gadgets while taking aside books and other physical reading materials. Books are becoming less important especially to kids these days because their attention is entirely diverted to devices and the internet.

However, as already mentioned, there four good reasons why you should be reading books instead of spending your time looking at your computer or smartphone without actually gaining that much knowledge compared to reading books.


Reading is proven to reduce stress and increase relaxation.

When you feel stressed, and you don’t know what to do, engage yourself in books. Books are known to reduce your stress levels, and it makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. Reading books improves the ability of the person to think and imagine scenarios in his head, and that is healthy for the mind.


Reading can be an enjoyable activity without damaging your eyes. With gadgets, you are exposing yourself to radiation and books don’t have that issue. It was proven that by reading for about six minutes, your stress levels would go down instantly.

“Losing yourself in a book is the ultimate relaxation,” Dr. David Lewis, cognitive neuropsychologist, said. “It really doesn’t matter what book you read, by losing yourself in a thoroughly engrossing book you can escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world and spend a while exploring the domain of the author’s imagination.”


Reading combats mental decline and Alzheimer’s disease.


The older you get, the more likely you are to develop several illnesses which can include Alzheimer’s disease. If you are finding a way to make your brain healthier by working on some things, you should be reading books because they are good for the mind. It will also make you less prone to developing Alzheimer’s disease even with old age.

“We discovered early on that those who read more are less likely to develop cognitive decline. So the more you read, the better,” says Robert Wilson, PhD, a professor of neurological sciences at Chicago’s Rush University.

Our brain is the chief organ of our body which is sending stimuli and other precautions. You must take care of it to preserve yourself.


Doctors prescribe reading as a treatment for certain health conditions.


Further studies discovered that reading a book helps in battling some severe mental health conditions like anxiety and depression. Reading enables you to become calm and relaxed which improves your mood at any time. This will work perfectly for those who are suffering from anxiety and depression because their feelings will alter less and they will have the strength to control their thoughts rather than freaking out or exploding. It’s called therapeutic reading, and some doctors recommend it as a treatment.


Offering books to people who are experiencing some mental health issues may help them recover from being too aggressive or being bipolar just because their brain will focus more. Their minds will get creative, and their imagination will take place on what they are reading. It diverts their depressive mood to something good.


 People who read often become more empathic.

The more books you read, the more you are engaged with the character’s feelings which can be relatable in real life. Reading will help you understand more about how a person feels or thinks because they are mostly explained and experienced by the characters in the books. It is a mirror image.

“Indeed, in one respect novels go beyond simulating reality to give readers an experience unavailable off the page: the opportunity to enter fully into other people’s thoughts and feelings,” recounts Keith Oatley, PhD, an emeritus professor of cognitive psychology at the University of Toronto.

This will help you improve your relationship with the people around you because you can now understand them more. You can even help them to help you as you let them know how you can cope and manage your mental health issue.

When you read books, you don’t only learn new things, but you also tend to understand the reality of the world and what every person feels. It will make you appreciate life more, and to live it will be worthwhile and meaningful, amidst the mental health problems.
